Moving House: Electricity Transfer Guide
Moving house is the best opportunity to switch electricity plans. You are disconnecting anyway. You might as well compare plans while you are at it. The whole process takes about 10 minutes.
The 3-Step Process
1. Disconnect at Old Address (3 days before moving)
Call your current retailer or use their app. Tell them your move-out date. They will schedule a final meter read. You get a final bill for the old address. Give at least 3 business days notice or you might pay for power at an empty house.
2. Compare Plans for New Address (while you wait)
Your new postcode might have different rates. Different network. Different solar FIT. Go to Energy Made Easy or use a comparison site. Enter your new address. Pick the cheapest plan. Do not just transfer your old plan. Moving is the one time switching costs you nothing extra.
3. Connect at New Address (1-2 days before moving)
Sign up with your chosen retailer. Give them the move-in date and new address. They handle the connection. If the power is already on at the new place (most rentals are), you just get transferred to the new plan. If the power is off, they will arrange reconnection (usually same day in metro areas).
Three Mistakes People Make When Moving
- Forgetting to disconnect the old address. You keep getting billed. Set a reminder.
- Transferring the old plan without comparing. The new postcode might have a completely different cheapest retailer.
- Not giving enough notice. Call at least 3 business days ahead. Same-day connections cost extra.
