Gas Prices Australia 2026

Gas prices have been more volatile than electricity over the last few years. The war in Ukraine, LNG export prices, and domestic supply constraints all push the price around. The good news: gas competition works similarly to electricity. You can switch retailers and save.

Dual Fuel: Bundle or Separate?

Most retailers offer a dual fuel discount if you bundle gas and electricity. Usually 3-5% off both bills. This sounds good but the math often does not work out. A 5% discount on above-average rates is still more expensive than two separate retailers with lower base rates.

Compare the total cost of bundled vs separate before committing. Alinta tends to be the cheapest for both gas and electricity individually, but their dual fuel discount is smaller than AGL's.

Should You Ditch Gas Entirely?

Gas is on the way out in Australia. Victoria is banning gas connections in new homes from 2024. Heat pumps are replacing gas heating and hot water. Induction is replacing gas cooktops. If your gas appliances are nearing end of life, do the math on replacing them with electric. The higher upfront cost is offset by eliminating the gas supply charge ($260-290/year) plus lower running costs. Over 10 years, all-electric usually wins.
