Electricity Prices Queensland 2026

Queensland has a two-tier electricity market. South East Queensland (SEQ) including Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast has full retail competition. Regional Queensland is mostly served by Ergon Energy with limited retail choice. If you are outside SEQ, your options are narrower.

QLD Solar: The Real Advantage

Queensland gets more sun than any other state. A 6.6kW system in Brisbane generates about 28 kWh/day on average, compared to 23 kWh in Melbourne. If you have panels in QLD, the feed-in tariff matters a lot because you export more.

AGL's 15c feed-in tariff in QLD makes them genuinely competitive here, despite higher usage rates. For a solar household exporting 10 kWh/day, that extra 3c over Origin's 12c is about $110/year. It almost cancels out AGL's higher usage rates.

Regional QLD (Ergon)

Outside SEQ, Ergon Energy is the default retailer for most households. You can still choose a different retailer, but the pool is smaller. Alinta, Origin, and AGL serve regional QLD. Check your postcode. If you are on Ergon's standing offer, you are almost certainly paying too much. Even switching to Ergon's market offer saves 5-10%.
